Osmotic response of lymphocytes measured by means of forward light scattering: theoretical considerations.

چکیده
Recent data provide solid experimental evidence that increase in cell size of human lymphocytes, caused by osmotic stress, is not directly proportional to forward scattering intensity but rather is inversely proportional. Here, we provide arguments that this phenomenon can be quantitatively explained by means of a model based on a modified Rayleigh-Debye-Gans theory. As a consequence, the current view that forward scattering intensities can be used as a measure of gross cell size needs to be reconsidered. In addition, we postulate that structural changes of the cytoplasm, imposed by an osmotic stress, reflect corresponding changes in the nucleus.

Application of orthogonal light scattering for routine screening of lymphocyte samples.
Orthogonal and forward light-scattering properties of lymphocytes were measured from patients with different lymphocytic diseases in order to determine the potential value of light scattering as a screening device. Monitoring of orthogonal light scattering of lymphocytes of a B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia patient during splenic irradiation (SI) revealed the selective decrease of malignant...
متن کاملNonlinear Responses and Optical Limiting Behavior of Ag Nanoparticle Suspension
In this study, the nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting performance of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in distilled water are investigated. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of the colloid is measured by the Z-scan technique. The optical limiting behavior of the AgNP suspension is investigated under exposure to nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The results show that nonlinear ...
متن کاملLight-scattering polarization measurements as a new parameter in flow cytometry.
Polarization measurement of orthogonal light scattering is introduced as a new optical parameter in flow cytometry. In the experimental setup, the electrical field of the incident laser beam is polarized in the direction of the sample flow. The intensity of the orthogonal light scattering polarized along the direction of the incoming laser beam is called depolarized orthogonal light scattering....
متن کاملMechanisms Involved in Osmotic Backwashing of Fouled Forward Osmosis (FO) Membranes
Organic matter leads to one of the biggest problems in membranes: fouling. Developing efficient cleaning processes is therefore crucial. This study systematically examines how alginic acid fouling formed under different physical and chemical conditions affect osmotic backwashing cleaning efficiency in forward osmosis (FO). The fouling layer thickness before and after osmotic backwashing was mea...

Reflection spectra of four porous silicon samples under etching times of 2, 6, 10, and 14 min with current density of 10 mA/cm2 were measured. Reflection spectra behaviors for all samples were the same, but their intensities were different and decreased by increasing the etching time. The similar behavior of reflection spectra could be attributed to the electrolyte solution concentration which ...
